Five Cheers for China and Hong Kong!

Avnet China recently bagged seven prestigious human resources awards over three months. Their success confirms Avnet’s commitment to people and the planet.

"Best Social Enterprise in Greater China 2023”

In September, Avnet China was named “Best Social Enterprise in Greater China 2023” by HRoot, a prestigious leading human resource media company with more than 1,000 partners in Greater China. Of the 720 companies that participated, only 140 received awards. It was the second time that Avnet China had received the award, following a win in 2021.

Our colleagues in China invested a great deal of energy in Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) efforts over the past year. Their heartfeltl efforts clearly fulfilled the organizers’ four criteria of Prospect, Attraction, Innovation and Energy.

For example, this year marked the fourth year of a 5-year partnership with Wuhan Linjie Rehabilitation Center for Children with Autism, which saw out colleagues in China organize the third in a series of successful art exhibitions for young artists with autism. Avnet also printed selected artworks onto cards, mousepads and other small items, to raise funds and awareness for this special group of children.

In addition, tree-planting schemes were undertaken in Shanghai Gulf National Park and Beijing. A rural revitalization project in China supported financially challenged farmers in the Dabaitian village, Fengshan town in Yunnan province. And coastal clean-ups were undertaken on the beaches of Shenzhen and Shanghai.

Grace Dong, Regional President, Avnet China, received the award on behalf of her colleagues at the OneFLAG awards ceremony in September.

“Doing good does a power of good not only for the beneficiaries, but also for the volunteers. The sense of working together for the greater good is immensely gratifying. It forges close personal connections and promotes teamwork – and when you’re planting trees or cleaning beaches, it also provides a good workout and a healthy dose of fresh air,” said Grace. “Thank you to my colleagues who gave of their time and in our various volunteering activities. This award belongs to all of us!”

“Best HR Team 2023”

Also in September, Avnet China and Hong Kong were conferred the title of “Best HR Team 2023” by HRflag, the leading HR management think tank in China, at its annual OneFLAG awards ceremony in September. Out of a record high number of 1,552 applicants, only 72 were successful.

The organizers’ criteria of Innovation, Achievement and Value were met by the HR team’s ongoing efforts in ESG and employee engagement. In addition, the hardworking team once again organized a Corporate Charity Run – the ninth since 2012, and an annual occurrence (except at the height of the coronavirus pandemic). To date, more than 700 people have participated in the event, which not only raises funds for worthy causes but promotes a healthy work-life balance.

Welcome Wang, Director II, Human Resources China, and Jessie Liang, Senior Human Resources Manager, received the award on behalf of their HR teammates at the OneFLAG awards ceremony in September.

“On behalf of my colleagues in HR, I would like to say a sincere thank you to the organizers of the OneFLAG awards,” said Welcome. “It turns out that putting people first helps us come first, too. We are deeply honored by this accolade.”

“Best Companies to Work for in Asia 2023” and “Most Caring Company”

Echoing Avnet Taiwan’s double distinction a few months earlier in the Taiwan chapter of the HR Asia awards, Avnet China took two top honors. In circulation for more than a decade, HR Asia serves as a trusted source of information for best practices and up-to-date HR trends on a global scale.

In confidential surveys conducted by HR Asia, employees rated Avnet China highly in the criteria of Core, Self and Group. It’s the inversion of the usual scenario – the performance review in which the employer reviews the employee. Thankfully, we passed with flying colors.

The highly coveted “Most Caring Company” award is given out to only a handful of companies every year. It recognizes the best companies to work for in Asia for implementing practices and policies that prioritize the wellbeing of employees, and promotes a great workplace environment.

A Trio of Tributes for Avnet Hong Kong

In November, Avnet Hong Kong bagged three awards in the respected HR Distinction Awards 2023 Hong Kong – two Golds and a Bronze.

Our HR colleagues in Hong Kong received a Gold “HR Distinction Award in Compensation & Benefits,” after striking Gold in the same category in 2015, and Silver in 2016. The company’s success in attracting and retaining great people attests and confirms its success in this all-important area.

Avnet Hong Kong secured a second Gold award in the new category of “Employee Care and Wellbeing.” It acknowledges organizations that prioritize the health, safety and overall wellbeing of their employees, resulting in a highly engaged and motivated workforce. Creative initiatives undertaken by Avnet Hong Kong included Thrive, AWOW (Flexi@Work arrangement in Asia) and the Wellness e-Book.

Last but not least, our Hong Kong office secured a Bronze “HR Distinction Award for Excellence in Leadership Development,” based largely on its creative approach to developing leaders, which included the innovative LearnFest 2023 and MentorConnect programs.

“The HR Distinction Awards confirm what we know in our hearts to be true – that looking after our people is looking after our business. May we continue to reward our employees for their commitment to Avnet, and may our Human Resources colleagues continue to be recognized for their efforts to this end,” said James Tan, Senior Vice President – Human Resources, Asia Pacific & Japan. “I am deeply thankful to my HR colleagues in Hong Kong, and to the organizers of the HR Distinction Awards 2023, on receiving this trio of tributes.”

Congratulations to Avnet China for the slew of honors received in the final quarter of 2023. It is clearly not only a great place to work, but a truly caring organization that nurtures not only its employees but also the wider community and the environment.
