Avnet Hong Kong Throws a Birthday Party for Very Special Guests

On March 2, 2024, 16 of our colleagues in Hong Kong held a heartwarming birthday celebration for 40+ beneficiaries with intellectual disabilities at Yuen Long District Support Centre.

A Concerted Effort

The “Find the Birthday Stars” event was helmed by Hong Kong’s Avnet Care team and made possible by the cooperation of the non-profit Wai Ji Christian Service, a social service agency supported by the Hong Kong Social Welfare Department.

Volunteers deepening their understanding of DEI at the briefing session

Prior to the event, a comprehensive briefing session deepened volunteers’ understanding of diversity, equity and inclusiveness (DEI), and equipped them with the knowledge they needed to interact and communicate effectively with their guests.

Adding the finishing touches to the delicious parade of birthday cakes

The well-planned celebration boasted a full program of festivities including games, prizes, and – of course – cakes!

Celebrating Diversity and Fostering Inclusiveness

Like all charitable activities, the giving was a two-way street. The guests were given an opportunity to mix, mingle and make new friends. They were delighted and entertained by the games, and gladdened to feel included in a social gathering with non-disabled people.

For their part, the volunteers were given the opportunity to plan the event and to bond over a common purpose. They felt an overwhelming sense of satisfaction about their efforts to make a positive impact on the lives of the beneficiaries. And overall, the meticulous planning and execution of the event helped hone the organizational skills of all involved.

Shining a Light on DEI

Kelvin Ng, a quality engineer at Avnet Hong Kong and one of the big-hearted volunteers, expressed it well when he said, “Find the Birthday Stars is an event that embraces the unique light within each soul. With joy and gratitude, we celebrate the beauty of connection and the power of inclusion. Let us cherish these moments of shared warmth and love, as we illuminate the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities.”

Congratulations to the party planners who lit up the faces of the “Birthday Stars” and set a shining example for all of us to follow on the road to diversity, inclusiveness and awareness (DEI).
