Avnet Advances India’s Roadmaps for the Semiconductors and EV Industries

In April, the management of Avnet India met with India’s Honorable Minister of Communications Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, to discuss the way forward for the semiconductors industry. Days later, Avnet partnered with Infineon Technologies to share innovative solutions for light electric vehicles at a well-attended event in Bangalore.

Leading the Semiconductors Industry

On April 18, Tan Aik Hoon, Regional President, South Asia, Korea and Avnet United, Suresh Kamath, Managing Director, Avnet India, and Anjana Nair, Financial Controller, Avnet India, met with Mr. Vaishnaw at the invitation of the ministry. As one of the leading global distributors in India’s semiconductors industry, they spoke about the constraints facing distributors doing business in the sub-continent.

Foremost among the challenges facing our industry in India is a lack of warehouse facilities. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this problem, and highlighted the need to stockpile components as a buffer against potential supply chain shortages amid surges in demand.

“It was a great honor to meet with the Minister and speak on behalf of the whole industry about the issues and challenges that we, and in turn our customers, are facing today. The Government of India has taken our input on board and has formed a dedicated task force to devise ways in which to ensure a smooth supply of components to the telecommunications and electronic manufacturing industry,” said Aik Hoon.

“We look forward to growing India’s semiconductor market, fuelling the growth of domestic manufacturing, and meeting the escalating domestic demand for high-quality, hi-tech and cost-effective electronics,” added Suresh.

Driving LEVs Further, Faster in India

On April 20, at the Avnet offices in Bangalore, our colleagues in India partnered with Infineon Technologies to conduct a workshop called Charging Up the Ecosystem of Light Electric Vehicles.

The event targeted the developers, engineers and manufacturers of LEVs. It showcased battery charging solutions designed by Avnet Design Services and incorporating Infineon Technologies’ parts.

“This event was a great opportunity to connect with potential customers in Bangalore, the hub of LEV research and development in India,” shared Aik Hoon. “Many of our designs are close to manufacturable designs, ready for evaluation at our customers’ premises on actual loads. This helps our customers comply with local government policies and regulations, and expedites their go-to-market strategies to meet the accelerating demand for LEV charging solutions.”

The well-attended workshop in Bangalore

The event was attended by close to 50 guests, hailing from 24 key customers. It is likely to be followed by similar workshops in New Delhi and Pune.

Congratulations to all of our colleagues involved in both the milestone meeting with the Indian government, and the first-of-its-kind workshop in Bangalore. On the verge of becoming the most populous nation on earth, India is definitely an exciting market to watch.
