Avnet Helps Make MakeNTU a Thrilling Contest

For the second year in a row, Avnet and its valued supplier NXP Semiconductors co-organized Taiwan’s foremost national maker and hacker contest, MakeNTU. The high-profile event, hosted by National Taiwan University (NTU) on May 6 and 7, was held at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park.

Epic Battle of Ingenuity and Creativity

Themed “Eureka”, derived from the Greek language, aiming to inspire participants to seek inspiration in life, stimulate their creativity, and unlock their full potential. The high-adrenalin event attracted around 500 attendees.

The 2-day contest was preceded by a technical workshop on March 18, during which the contestants were introduced to innovative IoT solutions developed by Avnet and fellow presenter NXP. Both presenters provided the attendees with a wealth of human resources information on-site, fulfilling the secondary objective of recruiting bright young graduates.

Avnet enjoyed strong brand exposure at the MakeNTU technical workshop and contest, alongside partner NXP

The contestants, who represented the cream of outstanding students from all over Taiwan, were tasked with the project brief: “Gathering technological talents, embracing sustainable development and green engineering using NXP development boards to develop the spirit of Eureka.”

Each team of students had 24 hours over two days to realize their concept from ideation to creation, using the latest technology and software and hardware platforms jointly provided by NXP Semiconductors and Avnet. In particular, many of the projects starred the i.MX RT 1060 development board and IW416 Wi-Fi module.

As you can see from the looks of intense concentration on their faces, the contestants were totally focused on bringing their projects to fruition within a short timeframe that in many ways emulated the real-world urgency of the race to market. “Eureka!” – a jubilant expression uttered on striking gold or attaining success, perfectly captured the emotions of the contestants upon realizing their ideas.

Young makers at work

Steven Liao, Vice President, Supplier Management, Avnet Taiwan, said, “MakeNTU is a fantastic opportunity for young makers to get a taste of real-world pressures. In a world where technology is advancing faster than ever before, and customers are clamoring for solutions to make their lives better, healthier, more efficient and more enjoyable, there is no such thing as the luxury of time.”

Congratulations and Future Welcomes

Upon presenting the awards to the winners, Steven added, “The contestants really rose to the challenge and thoroughly earned their “Eureka moments”. I am honored and overjoyed to share in their excitement over their accomplishments. In the not-too-distant future, I hope to be welcoming many of them to the Avnet family.”

Congratulations to the triumphant young makers, and look forward to seeing their brilliant ideas make it to market one day not too far away.

The victory salute
