Avnet Cares About Sustainable Farming

Volunteers from Avnet Taiwan and the fruits of their labor – 110 kgs of organic sweet potatoes

The Avnet Cares team in Taiwan have been busy with two Environment Social and Governance (ESG) projects that saw them harvesting organic sweet potatoes, and collecting organic eggs.

Helping Out with the Harvest

On December 8, 2023, a group of 57 colleagues, including sales director Kenneth Hsu and HR director JJ Jang, visited a local organic farm for the morning. Their visit kicked off with an informal talk on the philosophy of organic farming, which yielded plenty of food for thought on how we can sustainably fill the world’s food bowl.

After a briefing on the basics of harvesting, the volunteers got down to work and harvested around 110 kilograms of sweet potatoes. The impressive haul was later distributed to social welfare organizations.

Judy Lo, associate director, HR, spoke for all when she said, “It was a great opportunity to understand and experience the eco-friendly methods of organic farming. Experiencing a sustainable agricultural operation in person has deepened my knowledge and strengthened my support of environmental sustainability.”

A Chicken and Egg Situation

On April 19, 2024, a second group of 30 volunteers, led by Avnet Taiwan’s regional president Mike Cheng, visited an organic chicken farm. They spent the morning learning about the fundamentals of organic egg production, preparing organic chicken feed, feeding the chickens, and collecting eggs.

The volunteers lent a helping hand to the farmers, who have long been feeling the pain of an industry-wide labor shortage. In the process, they advanced their understanding of egg production and paused to reflect on the origins of the food we eat every day.

Volunteer and senior sales manager Andy Chen praised the event and the efforts of the Avnet Cares team behind it. “We’ve lived in the city for so long and eat eggs every day, yet we rarely have the opportunity to truly understand how hens lay eggs. The highlight was being able to personally collect eggs from the hens, which was a very rare and special experience. From now on, I will participate in every event organized by the Avnet Cares Team,” said Andy.

Caring and Sharing Good Ideas and Practices

Avnet Cares is an employee-led volunteer initiative of Avnet and a highly successful corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ESG program that has been embraced and adopted by offices around the region. In Taiwan, the Avnet Cares team is focused on the needs of social welfare organizations and aims to make a positive contribution to society and the environment.

An eggs-ellent experience at the chicken farm!

Chris Chien, Avnet Cares team leader and senior sales engineer, Avnet Taiwan, reflected on the activities that she and her teammates have organized to date. “From our safe fruits and vegetables project, to the friendly farming for sweet potatoes and egg farming experiences, all our activities support environmental sustainability, eco-friendliness or animal welfare,” Chris reflected. “The Avnet Cares team hopes to organize many more such activities in the future, so that more colleagues can participate and share the good ideas they encounter.”

We salute all the volunteers who headed to the farms for a taste of life on the land, and salute the Avnet Cares team for organizing these meaningful activities.
