Kary Cai, a senior director in supplier and product management at Avnet China and Hong Kong, thrives on challenges and smashing goals. At work and on the track, this passionate runner continues to pick up the pace and inspire others around him to keep up and step up.
Picking up the baton
After joining Avnet in 2004, Kary spent three years in his original role as a FAE before moving on to product marketing in 2007. In 2016, he was made associate director of Supplier & Product Management. Then, around a year ago in 2023, Kary was promoted to his current senior director position in Supplier and Product management.

In Kary’s current role, he engages with executive-level suppliers to optimise the sales of assigned product lines and maximise returns for both Avnet and our partners. He relishes a challenge and has played an integral role in reviving ailing business relationships.
How has revenue more than doubled within 5 years
Kary is a runner and now finds himself enjoy running with the team even more. He likened the feeling of securing the business to a runner’s high – the rush of endorphins following a race. “We run fast alone but go far together,” Kary said.
After taking on the role of director of supplier and product management in 2019, Kary and his team inherited a major challenge. A key supplier was falling far short of its targets, and the future of their working relationship with Avnet was in jeopardy. Two warning letters had been issued, as sales were falling far short of targets.
Grace Dong, Avnet China’s regional president, defined a new strategy and Kary picked up the baton to spearhead a reform that involved breaking down complex tasks into separate but interconnected roles. Assigned the new roles, Kary’s team members rallied and took ownership of their respective responsibilities.
As the team leader, Kary not only did his duty to manage communications with suppliers and customers but also facilitated the training of FAEs to support demand creation. Grew from an FAE with field experience and a technical background, Kary knew how important it is for long-term growth and profitability.

The sum of their concerted efforts added up to make a huge difference that turned the business around. Prior to this strategic reform, the key supplier’s sales revenue had been hovering around the same level for 10 consecutive years without a real breakthrough. Now the business growth more than doubled within five years.
“Each team member embraced their new or adjusted job description, and worked independently yet in unison towards a common goal,” reflected Kary. “The team united to make it happen. I appreciate their contribution and want to celebrate every one of them.”
Kary On and Keep Running
Outside of work, Kary’s passion is running. On weekends, he regularly runs 10 to 20 kilometres around rivers and streams, and completes half-marathons with ease.
On weekdays, instead of driving or catching public transport, Kary walks to work. He makes a point of reaching the office by 8am. During that window before 9am, when there are fewer phone calls, he takes the time to gather his thoughts and mentally prepare his game plan for the challenges of the day ahead.
“I can think about a lot of things while running and brisk walking. This quality ‘alone time’ allows me to clear my mind,” shared Kary.

After two decades at Avnet, Kary shows no signs of slowing down. No doubt he has many more races to pick up.
We’re cheering Kary on.
Yet, Kary cheers us on.
