Planting Trees and Growing Friendships in China

The tree-planting party comprising Avnet colleagues and our valued partners

In China, hundreds of volunteers from Avnet, Farnell, and our valued partners in Wuhan, Beijing, and Shanghai recently planted trees as a part of Avnet’s ongoing ESG efforts.

Sowing the Seeds of a Tradition

Avnet China’s initial tree-planting event took place in 2021 to commemorate Avnet’s 100th anniversary when 100 volunteers planted 100 trees in Shanghai Gulf Park.

The second tree-planting initiative by Avnet Shanghai occurred in March 2023, when a group of volunteers planted 108 trees, also in Shanghai Gulf Park.

On April 24, 2024, a tree-planting party of 145 volunteers gathered again at the same location, comprised of our valued partners and colleagues from Avnet and Farnell. Together with suppliers and customer representatives, we planted 120 Bald Cypress trees.

Once again, the day out was an enriching one. Not only did it provide an opportunity to simply get out of the office and enjoy a change of scenery, but the informal atmosphere nurtured friendships between Avnet staff and partners. Everyone enjoyed a sense of unity in shared manual labor, engaging in light-hearted banter that was quite unlike the more formal conversations that typically occur in a workplace.

The exercise not only strengthened ties between Avnet and its partners but also encouraged bonding between colleagues from different departments and function groups within Avnet companies, such as Farnell staff, Avnet China staff, and staff under AMD Xilinx, Avnet Japan, Avnet Taiwan, and Avnet United that are based in China. The volunteers hailed from every department as well as the senior management team – Grace Dong, Welcome Wang, Kary Cai, Tom Wang and Weiwei included.

Bonding and Banding Together

Besides the tree-planting party in Shanghai, such activities have spread to other cities such Beijing and Wuhan, becoming an important piece of Avnet China’s ESG strategy. In Wuhan, a group of 36 volunteers planted 35 trees at the Qinglongshan National Forest Park. In Northern China, a volunteer group of 45 planted 40 trees at the Beijing Shengquan Mountain.

We’re pleased to report that the saplings have taken root and spread their branches to create a lush, green forest that delights all who behold it.

“It is now widely accepted that human beings are happiest when working and living close to nature. Planting trees is therefore not only a gift to the community, but to the future of humankind,” said Grace Dong, president of Avnet China. “In a world where consumer goods are quickly made obsolete by the newest model or the latest technology, trees outlast lifetimes. Their gifts of beauty, shade and fresh air multiply over time. Trees, which yield rich returns on investment of care, are not unlike the fruitful relationships we nurture with our partners.”

We all look forward to the greening of the parks, and to thriving friendships between colleagues and partners that grow stronger over the years. Well done, friends at Avnet China!
