Simon Climbs Every Mountain |
|
This issue, it is our pleasure to introduce you to our colleague Simon Lee, Supplier Management Specialist at Avnet, South Korea. A relative newbie, he joined the company in June of 2021. During working hours you’ll find him tackling mountains of work, and after hours you’ll find him climbing actual mountains.

Simon Lee conquers yet another mountain
|
A Solo Climber and a Team Player
In a typical working day, Simon communicates with vendors, colleagues and relevant internal departments on a wide range of issues related to sales and marketing. He is involved in the small details of serving and supporting customers, and in the big picture of mapping a future for Avnet in the competitive South Korean market. (When you think of it, it’s a lot like climbing a mountain – you need to look out for footholds and safe routes along the way before getting to enjoy the view from the top.)

Simon is the first to admit that his working style has changed during his two-plus years at Avnet. “Since I am now involved in visualizing the big picture for Avnet, I’ve started quantifying and diagramming various aspects of the business. And instead of focusing on individual people and their performances, I am more focused on the work of the entire team – all while keeping an eye on our competitors,” he shared.

Reflecting on his personal learning journey since joining Avnet, Simon said, “It would be nice to be able to handle everything on my own, but these days I'm increasingly preferring to do things through teamwork rather than tackling them alone. Frankly, I now recognize that teamwork is much more efficient.”

Challenges and Highlights
When asked to share highlights of his time at Avnet, Simon fondly recalls winning over customers who have been loyal to Avnet’s competitors for many years. These victories are especially sweet, for obvious reasons.
A recent highlight for Simon was AMD Tech Day in July 2023. “It was the first physical event after COVID-19 and it was not easy to organize. Though the event was larger and had more attendees than expected, it was a great success thanks to the teamwork of Avnet Korea. And it was an ideal opportunity for our team to connect with the key personnel of potential customers,” recalled Simon.
Another achievement I am proud of is that we managed to successfully win customers (who have been with our competitors for a long time) through excellent designs and solutions. For example, CS Corp. used to purchase Intel (Altera) for their repeater models. We stepped in to the competition and delivered AMD FPGA sample and achieved design wins and business opportunities.
Looking to the Top for Inspiration
While Simon finds inspiration in the majesty of nature, he looks up to Jaein Moon, the ex-president of South Korea, as a role-model. “With his brilliant mind and outstanding ability, he achieved success with an ease that others envied and always supported those who were struggling. Although he has his opponents, I feel humbled by his personality,” shared Simon.
Thanks for sharing, Simon. May you climb every mountain – be it mountains of work or towering peaks!
