Avnet Singapore Speaks at Regional Logistics Conference

In October, the Industrial Transformation Asia-Pacific (ITAP) exhibition and conference took place at Singapore Expo. It was an ideal platform for Avnet to speak up and be heard on how technology can help overcome the pitfalls and opportunities that no doubt lie ahead for the logistics industry.

Kaven Koh, Vice President, Logistic Operations, Avnet Asia Pacific, takes the microphone during the panel discussion at LogiSYM Platinum Series

Our Panel Speaker at the LogiSYM Platinum Series

Part of ITAP, the LogiSYM Platinum Series was an invitation-only roundtable discussion with some 150 leading experts in global supply chain management. Our Vice President of Logistic Operations Asia Pacific, Kaven Koh, took place in a lively discussion just before lunch on October 19, on the topic of “2023 – The Outlook, Opportunities & Pitfalls”.

Not surprisingly, the conversation centered on the painfully obvious problems the logistics industry is facing today, many of them exposed and expedited by the ongoing pandemic. However, the point was made that change is the only constant, and be it due to pandemic, natural disasters or a myriad of other factors, there will always be disruptions.

Transition from “Just in Time” to “Just in Case”

In his introduction, Kaven recapped the situation in the last 1 to 2 years. He explained how many companies, transitioned from a “just in time” to a “just in case” strategy. Hence, artificially inflated demand created stockpiling inventory in order to fulfill future orders to mitigate supply chain risk.

Kaven also touched on the challenges face globally ie. economic uncertainty, products lead time extension, interest rate hikes, energy crisis, the ongoing war, and other geo-political factors.

He also commented on centralized vs decentralized manufacturing. Some companies are already expanding their footprint in other parts of South Asia and ASEAN countries eg. India, Vietnam and etc.

Collaboration and Resilience Are Key to Success

In terms of navigating a way forward, Kaven spoke extensively on the importance of collaboration – with suppliers, customers, freight forwarders and even with competitors. He touched on our partnerships with our freight forwarders and courier companies. As compared to 2019, global integrator freighters have increased their capacity by +34% and Cargo airline freighters increased by +13%. However, passenger belly capacity remains at -29%.

Digitalization and automation are keys for the future. Digitalization will create a better visibility for supply chain when integrating with our business partners. Whereas automation such as ASRS (Automated Storage Retrieval Systems), VLM (Vertical Lift Modula), AGV (Automated Guided Vehicles) will bring about efficiency and productivity.

The takeout message is – Resilience and Collaborations are important factors in the challenging year(s) ahead.

Kaven spoke passionately about the need for collaboration at all levels of the supply chain network
