Hong Kong Colleagues Plant Seedlings and Seeds of Hope for the Future

Tree-planting volunteers from Avnet Hong Kong

On an overcast day in November, a group of 20 volunteers comprising Avnet Hong Kong staff and their family members headed for the outskirts of Ma On Shan to plant trees on land that had been ravaged by fire in 2020.

Rain Did Not Dampen Spirits

The environmental conservation project, organized by the Avnet Hong Kong Human Resources (HR) department in conjunction with ELCHK, Grace Youth Camp, took place on an overcast day with intermittent showers. However, the rain failed to dampen the spirits of the volunteers, who remained cheerful and committed to their tasks of planting seedlings and tending the regenerating vegetation.

The project was meticulously planned and methodically executed from start to finish. It involved measuring the heights of the seedlings and taking comprehensive notes on the conditions of the surrounding terrain, so that progress can be charted over time.

The seedlings were carefully measured, and the surrounding conditions documented, for future reference

After the day’s work was done, the volunteers enjoyed light refreshments and swapped stories of their experiences. Ironically, or perhaps not, considering the lungfuls of fresh mountain air breathed that day, everyone appeared energized after their labors.

Flat Organizational Structure on the Mountain

It was heartening to see management work alongside staff, with no regard for hierarchy. Edward Tsaur, Vice President, Marketing & Communications, Asia Pacific, spoke for all when he said: “The 2020 wildfire in Luchao Mountain, Ma’anshan, burned for nearly 20 hours, ravaging about 80 hectares of land and woods, and destroying the habitats of birds, insects and animals. It is inspiring to see that the area is recovering and regaining its vitality, thanks largely to the concerted efforts of volunteers and government departments. We need look no further than nature to find powerful symbols of hope.”

Edward went on to thank the HR department for hosting the tree-planting activity, and reminded us of the importance of interacting with nature. “Walking and working amid nature is a rare experience for city dwellers that brings many benefits. It is great for our general health. It raises awareness of the importance of environmental conservation. And it is a chance for us to give back to the community in a meaningful way.”

Getting close to nature!

Well done, Hong Kong. May your trees grow tall and strong, and your efforts bear fruit for generations to come.
